Making academic research more accessible through UX/UI and information design
A self-initiated redesign of my original sociology senior thesis, transforming a dense academic paper into a modern digital research report with improved hierarchy, readability, navigation, and data storytelling.
The original thesis contained useful research, survey data, literature review themes, and findings — but the traditional academic format made the content difficult to scan and visually understand. Long paragraphs, basic tables, default charts, and limited hierarchy made it harder for readers to quickly grasp the research story.
How might I preserve the original academic research while making it easier to navigate, scan, understand, and present visually?
The original was academically valid and thorough — it simply was not designed for modern digital reading, scanning, or presentation.
Pull the most important findings forward and make the report easier to understand at a glance.
Use stronger section openings, summaries, cards, pull quotes, and progressive disclosure.
Replace default charts and tables with cleaner visualizations, direct labels, stat cards, and explanatory captions.
Use a polished editorial design system that demonstrates UX/UI, graphic design, and information design skills.
The outcome
Executive summary, key findings, platform comparison, trust and bias charts, written response themes, and the full appendix — presented as a digital research experience.
The same research, restructured so the story is legible in seconds and the detail is still one scroll away.
This project demonstrates how information design can make dense academic research more accessible, scannable, and useful for a broader audience. By preserving the original research while improving structure, hierarchy, and visual storytelling, the redesign shows how UX/UI thinking can apply beyond apps and websites.
Revisiting this thesis helped connect my background in sociology and research with my current design practice. The redesign became an exercise in making complex information easier to understand, without changing the meaning of the original work.
